PFAS, Covid-19, and the Immune System: a new science review

The first official case of Covid-19 in the United States was reported earlier this year by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Fast forward to December and we now have more than 12 million reported cases, more than 250,000 deaths, and many unanswered questions surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

Scientists don’t understand all of the reasons why some individuals get Covid-19 and experience few or no symptoms while others fall gravely ill or die from the disease. One outstanding question is whether exposure to chemicals, such as PFAS, that can harm the immune system could be playing a role.

To explore this issue, Safer States, Sierra Club, and Toxic-Free Future created a new report that provides a high-level overview of the science around PFAS and how it intersects with the major public health threat posed by Covid-19. New research is emerging that could begin to provide more definitive answers to these questions; Safer States will work to update the document as we learn more.
