Chemical Bans and Phase-Outs
Legislatures across the country have banned the worst-of-the-worst chemicals from products. From flame retardants to PFAS, these bans have taken harmful products off store shelves and encouraged the use of safer alternatives.
When the scientific evidence mounts against a chemical, many states have taken action to eliminate that chemical all together. Often just a handful of state bans are enough to change the market. After only three states banned the use of phthalates in toys, Congress took notice and passed similar bans. Corporations took note too: after several states banned flame retardants in furniture, the furniture market innovated new non-toxic ways to achieve fire safety.
