The Illinois Sierra Club and others have led efforts to protect public health from toxic chemicals and promote environmental justice. Illinois has faced toxic chemical challenges in recent years, such as the discovery of toxic PFAS chemicals in state groundwater and intense pollution around 3M’s production facility in Cordova. With pressure from the Illinois Sierra Club and allies, the state has taken steps to address these issues, including developing a statewide PFAS action plan and implementing regulations to reduce emissions of harmful pollutants from industrial facilities.
